Ho Chi Minh City is a massive, sprawling city and it is also referred to as Saigon. The city changed its name after the American War, but many people still refer to it as Saigon.

Ho Chi Minh City is organised into several districts (rather like suburbs) and the majority of travellers head for District One, which is where there are numerous hotels. Within this location, the city has a distinct area in which the majority of hotels can be found.

If you are looking for a classy hotel, head for the area around Don Khoi Street. This is the street that leads from the Cathedral to the Saigon River and there are numerous hotels to choose from in this area.

Those on a budget and want plenty of life after dark are recommended to search around Pham Ngu Lao Street, which is commonly referred to as the ‘backpacker district’. Hotel options are plentiful and cheap.

Another affordable area, but with plenty of mid-priced options too, is around the Ben Thanh Market, which has lots of hotels and some good shopping and dining options at the same time.

All of these areas are in District One and are close to one another. In each area there are excellent dining options, although the higher priced restaurants are around Don Khoi Street.

Street food is very popular in Vietnam and it is more readily found around Ben Thanh Market and Pham Ngu Lao. It is incredibly cheap and diners usually sit on small plastic stalls in the street to enjoy their meal.

Disneyland, Florida has four main theme parks spread across nearly 122 square kilometres. Whilst every attraction draws millions of visitors each year, a few sights are particularly memorable and should not be missed.

Magic Kingdom

Located in the Magic Kingdom theme park, Main Street U.S.A, it is often the first stop when exploring Disneyland. This busy street is awash with colour, entertainment and attractions including the Disneyland Railroad and Mickey’s Soundsational Parade, featuring songs from several Disney movies and musicals. At the end of Main Street is the iconic Cinderella Castle. Built in 1971, the majestic castle is the centrepiece of Disneyland with lunch at Cinderella’s Royal Table being the chief attraction. Magic Kingdom also has Fantasyland, Liberty Square, Frontierland and Adventureland.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Arguably the most exciting and engaging of the theme parks, Disney’s Hollywood Studios is a trip back in time through all of Disney’s movie magic. From Mary Poppins’ carousel horse to Indiana Jones’ Epic Stunt Spectacular Show, Hollywood Studios hosts a variety of cinematic shows and rides. The most famous of the rides is aptly titled ‘The Great Movie Ride’ and showcases decades of Disney Cinema.

Fresno has gained the reputation of being the main cultural hub between San Francisco and Los Angeles. It is also the gateway to three of the country’s biggest natural parks. It is a very well developed urban centre and is home to a culturally diverse population of roughly 430,000. It has several museums including the only modern museum in the region. All around the Tower District and the downtown area, Art Deco buildings and other historical buildings can be found.

The city became the primary destination of the entire population of Millerton in 1872. The entire population of Millerton moved to the railroad line and built the town of Fresno. Located in the heart of San Joaquin Valley, Fresno is also called the “Garden of the Sun” because of its rich agricultural industry. Some of the largest wineries in the United States can be found in Fresno

Ash Tree

The name Fresno originates from the Spanish word for ash tree. When the people of Millerton transferred to Fresno, there were many ash trees in the valley. Today, sprawling farms and expansive orchards dominate Fresno’s landscape.

Fresno serves as the entry point to three popular natural parks. A mountain range to the east is called the Sierra Nevada. To the northeast is the Sierra National Forest, 1.3 million acres of rugged mountain terrain. At the upper edge of the Sierra National Forest is the famous Yosemite National Park. Such a pivotal location has made Fresno a frequent destination among hikers and mountaineers. Fresno also has many cultural sites and a unique location that appeals to nature lovers.

The largest city in Spain is the capital of Madrid, and the second largest city is Barcelona. Located on the eastern coastline of the country, Barcelona is the biggest city in Europe to be situated along the Mediterranean Sea. It is also considered one of the best places to visit for a variety of authentic Spanish fish and shellfish dishes.

Museums in Barcelona

Barcelona has several great museums, including the National Museum of Art of Catalonia, which showcases Romanesque art in particular. Modern art from the post-WWII period can be seen at the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, though to see works by the renowned Spanish artist Pablo Picasso, it is best to visit the Picasso museum in the city.

Other museums focus more on the history of the region, including the Archaeology Museum of Catalonia and the City History Museum, which concentrates on Barcelona itself. Another popular choice for tourists since 2006 has been the Cosmocaixa, the science museum that won the coveted European Museum of the Year 2006.

Architecture in Barcelona

The most famous structure in Barcelona is the Sagrada Familia, a cathedral designed by modern architect Antonio Gaudi. The Sagrada Familia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visited attractions in the city.

Those who find Gaudi’s work intriguing will also want to visit the Park Güell. This outdoor garden complex has also been designated as a World Heritage Site. Constructed during the decade that preceded World War I, the park contains freeform fences and benches as well as other decorative elements designed by the Catalan architect.

The modern nation of Austria was born at the close of World War I when the map of central Europe was reorganized. Today, the nation borders several countries including Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Slovakia, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. Austria is relatively simple for tourists to enter because it has signed the Schengen Agreement which provides free travel access throughout much of Europe.

Austria and Switzerland are both considered ideal locations for cheap holidays for winter sports because of the abundant snowfall in the Alps, which covers approximately 75% of the country and is particularly prominent in regions such as Tyrol, Salzburg, and Carinthia.

The most visited city in Austria is Vienna, which is located in the north-eastern region of Lower Austria. A favourite tourist activity in Vienna is visiting the restaurants and cafés which populate the city. The veal cutlet dish known as Weiner Schnitzel is something many visitors wish to try, but Vienna is probably most renowned for its dessert specialities including hot apple strudel and sweet dumplings filled with fruit. Vienna is also famous for the quality of its coffee and is one of the few capital cities in the world to boast its own local vineyards producing fine vintages of wine.

In just seven hours flying time from London, you could be in the most iconic shopping destination in the world, New York. A long weekend in the Big Apple provides plenty of time for some serious retail therapy, as well as taking in a few of the cities’ biggest attractions.

Any shopping trip to New York would not be complete without a stroll down Madison Avenue. High fashion brand names such as Prada, DKNY, Chanel and Hermes line the streets here, which is also a block over from Central Park should you need a rest.

Fifth Avenue is where the top department stores such as Bergdorf are located, and make sure you take in the famous Tiffany’s jewellery store, even if just to window shop. Fifth Avenue is also the home of the Empire State Building, where the 86th floor observatory offers a wide panorama over the city day and night.

If there are children to buy for, make sure you swing by FAO Schwarz; its two enormous floors of toys include many unique mini stores, such as one where you can create your own Barbie, as well as exclusive cuddly animals and bears from the likes of famous manufacturers Steiff.

For a change of scene, try SoHo, a pretty outdoor mall with cobblestone streets, which has everything from outdoor artists’ stands with one off pieces to boutiques offering everything from home ware to shoes.

End your quick shopping break to New York with a cocktail at the Waldorf Astoria, before a short overnight hop home – although you might need to buy a larger suitcase.

Even the most novice of sailors can learn to handle a narrowboat in an hour or two, so the pleasures of a slow sail around some of the UK’s peaceful canals is a holiday option that all can consider.

Boats can generally be hired for a long weekend, a week, a fortnight or even more if you have some spare time and fancy getting further afield.

The Fens, in the east of England, are a popular boating spot. Crossing several counties including Norfolk and Cambridgeshire, the Fens are a unique landscape. Created around 200 years ago by the draining of low-lying marshlands and wetlands, the area is lush in wildlife and plant life, with summers seeing a riot of wild flowers. Over 150 bird species can be found in various habitats, and keen fishermen can try their hand at catching a variety of species including pike, rudd and bream.

Many miles of waterways are accessible, with a number of fine historic cities and towns along the way – for example, visit Oliver Cromwell’s house in Ely in Cambridgeshire, and continue on to the ancient Saxon town of Downham Market. The Fens are also within easy walking distance to many local pubs and restaurants so, self-catering is not compulsory.

Most boats are centrally heated and come with fridges, gas cookers and power supplies, as well as comfortable beds, so roughing it is not necessary. Children are usually very welcome – just make sure they (and any pets) wear a flotation device at all times.

This hugely historic city is full of surprises. Architectural hints of its thousand year old existence are present alongside hip bars and themed restaurants, all giving off an Italian sense of cosmopolitan feel. There is an almost year-round temperature hovering around 30 degrees Celcius.

The Vatican Museums are certainly worth seeing but be prepared to queue up to see some of the popular masterpieces, such as the Sistine Chapel ceiling if you have not booked in advance. The Coliseum is immense and much larger than how it looks on photographs. The Domus Aurea Palace, built by Roman Emperor Nero is a masterpiece that gives a snippet of Roman Empire life. Near the centre of Rome you will also find the Baths of Caracalla, the ruins beneath San Clemente church as well as San Giovanni in Laterano.

Now if you are not much into sightseeing, then you can literally shop until you drop in the many shopping arcades, upmarket malls or boutiques. You will find everything from designer clothes to token souvenirs round Rome’s shopping districts, and of course, should you want to stop for a coffee, pizza or ice cream, then the city centre will have you spoilt for choice.
